Shorter videos are in demand. Here’s how different social media platforms are responding.

Shorter videos are in demand. Here's how different social media platforms are responding.

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Now that TikTok and Instagram Reels are slowly conquering social media marketing, there is no mistake: Short videos are in high demand.

The average length of most, if not all, business videos is only six minutes. And that number is expected to decrease as consumers look for shorter videos.

With that in mind, why are short videos in high demand? Which platforms best implement short videos? And most importantly, how can they benefit your business?

TikTok – Changing consumerism, one video at a time

When it comes to shorter videos, TikTok has always led the industry. What started as a merger with Musical.ly quickly became one of the world’s most powerful social media platforms. And what made it so famous? The same concept that made Vine viral short videos.

TikTok has over 1 billion active users, twice as much as Snapchat and Pinterest. For reference, Twitter only has 397 million users. With such a huge user base, the only thing that keeps the platform alive are the 15 second videos.

But why are short videos so popular? Simple – people don’t have time to spare. When they open apps like TikTok and Instagram, they are more likely to spend time watching shorter videos. And companies are already catching up.

The impact of Instagram roles

With the invention of Stories by Snapchat, other platforms like Instagram caught up with short videos. Instagram Reels offers adults and young users an easier way to tell others about their day. It uses quick photos and videos that are only available for 24 hours instead of being posted permanently. Now engagement is encouraged, especially after Instagram added the “Swipe” option. This allowed e-commerce sites to both advertise their products and make instant messaging easier.

Youtube has joined the bandwagon

While YouTube is more or less a platform for long videos, the recent update offers shorter vertical videos. Known as YouTube Shorts, this feature allows creators to engage with their audience in less than 60 seconds.

But YouTube has another trick up its sleeve, and this one is primarily aimed at advertisers. It is “YouTube TrueView” and is the main advertising technology for YouTube. This allows advertisers to promote long or short videos, some of which can be skipped after five seconds.

However, since most people probably not clicking on longer ads, YouTube now offers six-second, non-skippable ads. The clickthrough rate for shorter ads of 15 and 30 seconds is: about 70%, a great number for any business.

It’s time to say goodbye to IGTV

Now that Instagram’s IGTV seems less captivating than the reels and video posts, it has decided to remove IGTV. Instead, it has a separate section for videos. These videos appear on a person’s profile and can be viewed from the Instagram app.

The change they made here is that videos posted to the Instagram feed can be up to 60 minutes long. The exact reason for this has not been confirmed. But it seems that Instagram wants a seamless platform where short and long videos coexist.

This makes long videos more accessible to users using the Instagram app. And it helps promote video tutorials that people don’t normally use in social media apps.

Another important change is that Instagram videos that are longer can monetize, a feature not available on Reels. This significantly shifts the focus to creators who don’t sell a service and want to make money through Instagram.

Does this mean long videos are out of the picture?

With short videos become more popular Will long videos disappear among consumers? While it is highly recommended for any business to make videos as short as possible, the answer isn’t that black and white.

While short videos will drive traffic from new users, long videos are better for brand loyalty. Shorter videos get more engagement and appear in the feeds of new users. But longer videos are the backbone of your business.

Of course, that depends on what service you offer. Ecommerce businesses will want to focus their attention on short videos and ads. However, long videos are better suited if you want to delve deeper into product details. Of course, that’s only after you grab the user’s attention with a short video.

Companies offering webinars will take advantage of longer videos. And that also applies to companies that post interviews. However, promos and tutorial videos should last less than a minute or two, depending on how long the tutorial needs to be.

Basically ask yourself two questions:

  • First, can the video content be summarized in a short video?
  • Do you just want to grab the attention of the consumer or develop brand loyalty?

The right formula is not short or long, but a mix of both.

What this all means for an entrepreneur

Short videos have significant market value, especially for new businesses. Take the example of the Dollar Shave Club. What started as a viral video on YouTube grew into a behemoth of a brand.

And that’s not where the examples end. There are countless success stories like this one that prove the value of short videos.

Short videos have a higher click-through rate and for business owners, that’s all you need. Short videos are especially interesting for people with e-commerce businesses. For example, 84% of people say they are more compelled to buy a product by watching a video. And the stats continue to show a friendlier short video market.

There is no doubt that short videos are gradually creeping up the chart. And while long videos are great for information and brand loyalty, shorter ones are better for PR.

This begs one last question: are videos useful to you? The answer is yes!

Netflix India took to YouTube to share the video featuring Professor and other characters from the Money Heist series.

After a long and arduous journey that won the hearts of people around the world, the Netflix series Money Heist finally came to an end on Friday. The show’s conclusion also prompted many to share various posts on various social media platforms. Among them, there is also a video shared by Netflix India on their official YouTube channel. The clip shows some of the actors from the series thanking their fans in India. However, what has won the hearts of the people is Alvaro Morte, who plays the role of professor and says, ‘Namaste India.’

Fitbit’s Charge 5 tracker is back on sale for an all-time high of $130 at Amazon

If you missed a Fitbit during the Black Friday sale, don’t worry – there are now some great deals to help you stay in shape during the holiday season. The Charge 5 has returned to a record-low price from $130 at Amazon, or $50 under the usual sticker. That could make it a solid bargain if you’re looking for a high-quality fitness-focused activity tracker from a well-known name. The Inspire 2 is also out up to $60 (normally $100) if you’re happy with the essentials.

Buy Charge 5 from Amazon – $130
Buy Inspire 2 at Amazon – $60

The Charge 5 ticks many of the boxes if you’re determined to stay in shape. The extensive fitness and health tracking features help, especially if you get the advanced data from Fitbit Premium. For example, you can optimize your training performance and gain insight into your sleep quality. In addition to your heart rate and blood oxygen level, you can also track your stress and you get extras such as GPS, Fitbit Pay and a multi-day battery life.

There are limitations. Fitbit doesn’t share activity data with Apple Health or Google Fit, and you can’t control music from the tracker’s screen. There’s also the issue of competition: you can find some adequate alternatives from companies like Amazfit, Xiaomi and Amazon themselves that cost less (at least up front) if you can do it without some frills. Fitbit’s experience in the field matters, though, and the retail price makes the Charge 5 significantly more tempting.
