Severe weather, supply chain problems cause Christmas tree shortage

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Christmas trees can be harder to find this year. Not only is the supply chain crisis impacting, but there have been severe weather events where most of the Christmas tree farms are located.

Susan Merrill and her daughter came to Mr. Jingle’s Christmas Trees lot in downtown West Palm Beach to buy a tree.

“I love Christmas! And I want to get decorated soon. I’m here visiting my daughter and she needs to get in the mood,” Merrill said.

On this Thanksgiving, there were many people who came to the lot.

“It’s been a crazy rush. I’ve never seen people come this early to buy their Christmas trees,” said Brandon Helfer, co-owner of Mr. Jingle Christmas Trees.

According to the National Christmas Tree Association, there are approximately 15,000 Christmas tree farms in the US. Every year, Americans buy about 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees.

Most of the trees on the Downtown West Palm Beach lot come from farms in North Carolina. The tree lot also sells trees from Oregon, which suffered severe weather in the past year, potentially creating a shortage.

“For real trees, it’s a combination of extreme weather in the Pacific Northwest and Midwest, especially heat, flooding, fires, smoke from the fires,” said Jami Warner, executive director of the American Christmas Tree Association.

It takes about eight to ten years for farmers to grow a Christmas tree. The most popular are noble trees that were affected.

“The noble trees are a bit more expensive, because the heat and fires have obviously messed up a lot of trees,” Helfer said. “With rising fuel costs, shipping was slightly higher this year. But we managed to get through it.”

Warner recommends purchasing your tree as early as possible.

“You’ll be able to find a Christmas tree, a beautiful tree, of any size, shape, color and species you want,” Warner said. “You may have to look a little harder than usual and it will probably cost a little more.”

Susan got lucky and bought a noble tree from Oregon.

“I never dreamed I’d find a noble one, but yes, finding a fresh tree, it’s beautiful and straight from Oregon, it’s not easy,” said Merrill.
