Roanoke College men's lacrosse team raises $1,500 for Ronald McDonald House

SALEM, Va. (WFXR) – Roanoke College alumni and student athletes have joined forces to raise money and donations for the Ronald McDonald House – a home-away-from-home for families with children receiving treatment at area hospitals.

On Tuesday, November 23, the Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team presented a check for $1,500 to the Ronald McDonald House. In addition, the team delivered food and paper products that they had raised through a food campaign.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a comfortable home away from home for families of sick and injured children who need to come to Roanoke to receive the medical treatment they need. They also offer a Ronald McDonald family room at the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where parents can rest and regroup just steps from their child’s bed.

“I spoke to one of our alumni, Rocco Guglielmo ’85, and told him how our team wants to get involved locally,” said Austin Gambino ’22, one of the organizers of the food drive. “He mentioned the Ronald McDonald House here in Roanoke. As a team, we have decided to support them with a food campaign as Thanksgiving is approaching. We’re glad we could do what we did to help. They do so much for everyone in the community, and we want to help them.”

“The Ronald McDonald House is extremely excited about the support provided through this annual tournament,” said Stephanie Carroll, director of special events and community development at Ronald McDonald House Charities Southwest Virginia. “It’s a blessing now more than ever. The fact that the families can stay with their child makes a huge difference in the recovery. Families need the comforts of home to relieve as much stress as possible. The men’s lacrosse team is making a huge difference in making that possible.”

Aaron Cameron declared Tasman Series champion after dramatic no result at Bathurst - Highway F1

Cameron was making his way through the field after a previous incident when he came into contact with Luis Leeds in pursuit, sending them both into the gravel at high speed.

The race was red flagged and Motorsport Australia declared that the race had reached the required distance to award championship points.

Cameron takes home $30,000 for taking home the title, while Roberto Merhi took $10,000 for second place plus $5,000 for top international.

Nathan Herne started the final feature race on pole position, with James Golding taking the lead from the start.

Championship leader Aaron Cameron stopped off the line and fell to the back of the pack as the pair of Team BRM teammates battled for second off the line.

Joey Mawson was fastest into the first corner, but ran wide through Hell Corner, with Roberto Merhi in second.

The frenetic running calmed down for a moment as the peloton raced over the top of the mountain, but the battle resumed on the fastest part of the track.

Nathan Herne thought twice about moving around Luis Leeds for sixth at the end of Conrod Straight, but recovered and sailed past Leeds from The Chase with Cameron close behind.

The Valvoline Team GRM charge through the pack quickly ended in tears, with Cameron Herne snapping in Hell Corner.

The pair spun into the gravel pit and pulled out the safety car.

All this in just two rounds.
