YouTube TV is negotiating agreements with several medium-sized digital media companies, including Vox Media, Brat TV and Pocket.Watch, to add linear OTT channels to its platform, The Information reports.

Marketers are increasingly moving ad budgets to streaming platforms that serve ads to viewers, including NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service and ViacomCBS’s Paramount+.

Historically, YouTube has struggled to bring in advertisers who spend a large portion of their budget on broadcasting and cable television. While YouTube TV will have just over 3 million subscribers by Q3 2021, the company will continue to leverage the OTT streaming service to persuade advertisers to shift their TV budget to the platform.

In some cases, live TV broadcasts viewed on the platform cannot be skipped by the viewer. In addition, in transport agreements negotiated with content providers, YouTube may sell some of its commercial breaks to advertisers.

YouTube TV currently offers over 85 streaming live TV channels, a selection of popular broadcast and cable channels. All three companies mentioned above offer free streaming content on various platforms, including The Roku Channel and Pluto TV.

Vox, Brat, Pocket.Watch and other medium-sized streaming platforms typically offer free content to consumers in exchange for brand and advertising deals. For example, ‘Chicken Girls’, a script series by Brat, has a brand deal with Wrigley’s Extra chewing gum.

The YouTube TV deal gives these media companies another chance at additional revenue, likely in a revenue-sharing deal with YouTube. Mid-sized media companies have been looking for ways to continue grow sales, as some companies may want to launch public offerings in the coming months.
