Local Volunteer Continues Thanksgiving Tradition at Ronald McDonald House | KSNF/KODE

JOPLIN, Mo. – Happy Thanksgiving. While many families spend their Thanksgiving at home with their loved ones, giving back has become an annual tradition.

Fifteen years ago, Dick Oppenheim was asked by the then manager of the Ronald McDonald House of the Four States if he wanted to become a volunteer. 15 years later, he has never doubted that he would agree.

“I had no idea what it was all about, but it turned out to be something really great. You work with stressed families with children in the hospital and make their day a little brighter, so I enjoyed it,” says Dick Oppenheim – volunteer at Ronald McDonald House.

After many years of volunteering every Tuesday night, Oppenheim decided to start a tradition of his own: serving food to the families on Thanksgiving. But unlike every Tuesday night – this one day a year – he does it with his family.

“If I had to come alone on Thanksgiving, it wouldn’t be so much fun. It’s great to be here with them all. I have two grandchildren here today and my wife, so it’s just a family event,” said Oppenheim.

While this five-year tradition is a fun event for Oppenheim, it is an unforgettable one for his granddaughter.

“It makes me very happy, I like to help these people. They are very nice and sweet, it’s just really nice,” said Natalie Riesenmy – Dick Oppenheim’s granddaughter.

And besides serving food there was also live music.

“Just learning to play the piano is fun and just practicing and playing in front of people is fun,” Riesenmy says.

With another year of volunteering, serving food and live music in the books… It’s until next year. As for Dick… He’ll be back on Tuesday evening.
