Local restaurants ask city to break plastic ban - Fort Frances Times

The Municipality of Fort Frances will review the single-use plastic ordinance with the Planning and Development Executive Committee, upon receipt of a letter requesting that the ordinance delay its entry into force.

The letter, from Boston Pizza executive Dale Fortes, states that some restaurants are experiencing supply chain problems.

The letter was written by Fortes on his behalf, Sarah Noonan of La Place Rendez‐Vous, Duane and Grace Cridland of Flint House and Larry Pham of Mekong.

Fortes wrote in the letter that COVID-19 has turned restaurants around the world into some form of takeout.

“The sudden and massive demand for packaging products placed a heavy burden on suppliers,” Fortes wrote in the letter. “The ongoing problems with supply chain disruptions, coupled with labor shortages in North America, have further exacerbated the problems with the availability of packaging products.”

Fort Frances councilors expressed their flexibility, but also said that companies with two years’ notice were given ample time to make good agreements.

count. Mike Behan said that while he is in favor of referring this point to the Executive Committee for Planning and Development, he expressed concern that it might come up a month before the regulation takes effect.

“I’m a little disappointed that this wasn’t brought up sooner rather than at the last minute to bring this back to our December 13 board meeting before the bylaws would go into effect on January 1,” Behan said. “But this seems to be a valid concern.”

count. John McTaggart said when this ordinance was proposed, no one knew a pandemic was coming.

“I’m so thankful that I’m no longer in business, and my heart goes out to these companies,” said Mc Taggart. “If there’s any discretion we could have with these companies that might cause a short delay, I think it’s our duty to have that discussion.”

While Fortes said he and other companies support the regulation, which is expected to come into effect on January 1, 2022, supply chain disruptions have seen us see a 50 to 400 percent increase in packaging products.

Despite their support in the collective effort to reduce single-use plastics, Fortes said in the letter, the recovery effort has been slow and fraught with challenges, including higher costs and reduced availability of standard and greener packaging options.

count. Rick Wiedenhoeft said that he had discussed the letter with three of the four entrepreneurs mentioned. Wiedenhoeft said they are all 100 percent behind the regulation banning single-use plastics.

“That said, the pandemic is having a significant impact on their business and the disruption of the permitted packaging supply chain is real,” Wiedenhoeft said.

count. Douglas Judson also favored having the letter go to the committee for consideration, but said this could be an exercise of flexibility as opposed to an amendment to the statutes.

“I’m concerned that, with frankly over two years of runway, we’ll hear about this with one more council meeting before the ordinance goes into effect,” Judson said. “I also consulted with other restaurants who told me from the start that they found these products very good.”

At its December 5 meeting, the Planning and Development Executive Committee will make a recommendation to the council to be given at their December 13 meeting.

UNM communication in bad weather: UNM Newsroom

During times of inclement weather, the University of New Mexico uses a variety of communication methods to alert the campus community with information specific to the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho campuses regarding weather-related closures and delays, including LoboAlert text and email announcements, television, radio and social media. media.

In addition, UNM’s “Snow Hotline”, 277-SNOW, may also be used by the campus community, including faculty, staff, and students, regarding weather-related closure and/or delay.

The announcements indicate whether the university is open, delayed or closed. Other university departments, such as the Athletics Department and Popejoy Hall, will be responsible for advising their clients on the status of events on inclement weather days when closures or delays are announced.

To help employees with childcare arrangements, the university will try to match delays and closures of the Albuquerque campus with delays and closures of Albuquerque’s public schools, where practical. A similar policy is also in effect for UNM Health Sciences Rio Rancho Campus and Rio Rancho Public Schools. The directors of each branch campus will determine whether their respective campuses will close.

In the event that the university is delayed or closed, certain critical areas will have to remain open due to the nature of the activities. Critical operations directors will clearly communicate to their employees their attendance requirements during severe weather, regardless of what media messages are conveyed to the larger college population.

For example, patient care and other critical activities such as Facilities Management, Police and Housing will remain open when the university is declared closed due to inclement weather or open at normal times when a delay has been announced. Critical operations directors will prepare contingency plans, keep plans up to date, and communicate such plans to employees.

All employees required by their supervisors to work during a delay or closure will be paid for hours worked and will be given additional compensatory time off, at the normal rate, for hours actually worked during the delay or closure. Only employees who are required to work by their supervisor are given compensation time. Compensation time taken in such cases is not considered as time worked for overtime compensation.

For the purposes of UNM’s weather policy, a “delay” means:

  • workers not working in critical areas are not expected to report to work before the time specified in the delay notice;
  • classes and labs normally scheduled to begin and end before the time specified in the delay notice will not be held;
  • classes and labs that are normally scheduled to begin at the time specified in the delay announcement begin at the delayed start time and end at their normally scheduled time; and
  • classes and labs normally scheduled to begin on or after the time specified in the delay announcement will meet as usual.

A closure means that the university is not closed for a day or before the end of the regular working day. Employees are expected to return to their normal shift or work schedule at or after 6 a.m. the following day, unless otherwise noted on the SNOW hotline.

Shift workers should check the SNOW hotline two (2) hours before the start of their shift to see if the university has reopened before the 6am automatic reopening the day after a closure.

In the event of delays or closures during the final exam week, the faculty whose final exams are affected by the delay or closure may choose one of three options. The faculty must choose one of the options prior to the last exam week and clearly communicate to their students which option they have chosen.

The options are:

  • Faculty can assign as final grades, the current grades students have in the last exam week.
  • The faculty may make provisions for students whose exams are canceled to contact them to schedule a make-up exam or alternative arrangements.
  • As a last resort, the faculty may choose to award incomplete marks.

During periods of inclement weather, both workers and supervisors should keep two (2) important goals in mind:

  • the safety and well-being of employees; and
  • the need for the university to conduct regular business.

During periods of inclement weather, workers are expected to be at work as scheduled, but must take reasonable and safe measures to attempt to meet their work obligations. Also, an employee may have to leave work earlier to avoid dangerous driving conditions that can occur late in the day when temperatures drop. Supervisors are expected to be flexible in these situations in accordance with the business needs of the organizations and the reasonable health and safety needs of employees.

When a delay is announced, employees in non-critical areas are expected to report to work at the time indicated by the media, LoboAlert and Snow Hotline (277-SNOW) messages. When an employee cannot be at work at the expected time, the employee must notify his or her supervisor, explain the reason for the absence and provide an estimated time of arrival at work.
