FactCheck: Facebook post spreads fake claim about 'detox' after vaccination

The vaccines approved or authorized for use in the US against COVID-19 are safe and effective, as we reported. (See SciCheck’s articles on those vaccines:A Guide to Moderna’s COVID-19 Vaccine,“ “A Guide to Pfizer/BioNTech’s COVID-19 Vaccine” and “A Guide to Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 Vaccine.”)

For years, however, opponents of vaccines have promoted unfounded claim that vaccines introduce toxins into the body and that they can be removed through baths, dietary changes or other measures.

With people sometimes getting COVID-19 injections in line with vaccine mandates, toxicity claims have been given a new lease of life as vaccine opponents turn their attention to ineffective ways to counteract the effects of the inoculation.

A recipe for a “detox bath” doing the rounds on Facebook is based on a TikTok video by Carrie Madej, a Georgia internist with a large online following. Although Madej’s video was removed by TikTok in October, it was shared in duets of the video — a TikTok reshare feature that allows users to add comments to the original video — and gained thousands of views, according to CrowdTangle analytics.

In her video, Madej offered a list of mostly harmless ingredients — baking soda, Epsom salts and bentonite clay — for detox baths to remove radiation and poisons she falsely claims are in vaccines. That reports NBC News. She also recommended adding a cup of borax, a cleanser that can irritate skin and eyes, to remove “nanotechnologies,” a clear reference to what she’s more likely to call a “”liquid computer systemwithin vaccines.

Madej, who made other false claims about COVID-19 vaccines, including that they alter human DNA, insisted in a Instagram post on Nov. 14 that the detox bath video wasn’t about those shots. “For the record, I’ve never told anyone we have a detox for the current jabs,” she wrote.

But people are taking Madej’s cocktail and promoting it as a way to counter the COVID-19 vaccine.

One of her followers, Tammy Kelley, posted a photo of the ingredients on her Facebook page, writing, “This bath detox was shared by Dr. Carrie Madej. I have researched some of the benefits and these products remove bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, X-rays, heavy metals and food toxins and more. Recommended to anyone who pressured Vax’d and wished they didn’t.”

The Food and Drug Administration explains that while vaccines contain a variety of active ingredients and other substances, the agency “requires that vaccines undergo a rigorous and extensive development program in the lab, as well as in animal studies and human clinical trials, to determine their safety and effectiveness.”

Medical experts say the ingredients used in vaccines are non-toxic in the minute doses administered. And, they say, after getting the injection, there’s nothing to stop the vaccine from working.

“Once you’re injected, the life-saving vaccination process has already begun. You can’t ring a bell. It’s just not physically possible,” Angela Rasmussen, a virologist and adjunct professor at the University of Saskatchewan, told NBC News.

And the track record of vaccines goes without saying: polio, rubella, measles, whooping cough, rotavirus, mumps, chickenpox and diphtheria, among others, no longer occur in the US because of vaccines.

Remove water, not the vaccine

dr. Ian Musgrave, a molecular pharmacologist/toxicologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia, said proposed, but ineffective, vaccine countermeasures include: blood sampling with a snakebite set and cupping, in which heated cups are placed on the skin to create a partial vacuum next to it. body.

“None of the proposed methods will work to remove the vaccines and could potentially be harmful,” Musgrave said in an email to “All are based on a complete misunderstanding of how vaccines work.”

“By the time a ‘detox’ method is applied, most vector particles will have already delivered their payload into the cells,” he said.

Responding to the social media claims, Musgrave said, “borax, Epsom salts, and similar ‘detoxes’ act like a hypertonic solution… drawing out body water as your body tries to dilute the concentrated saline it’s immersed in.”

“But here’s the problem: It will remove water, but not large molecules” like those associated with vaccines, he said. “These cannot cross the tissue barriers in your body. It will at least concentrate them in your tissues a little bit.”

Snake bite kits, Musgrave said, “will not aspirate vaccine, just a little (if any) tissue water and possibly concentrate the vaccine. They also don’t work for snake bite.

As for cupping, he said: “This allows some body water to drain out, but doesn’t remove the vaccine. If something, it can increase vaccine absorption. Cupping tends to leave large bruises through bursting of blood vessels.”

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has deployed 14 Anti Smog Guns (ASGs) to combat air pollution at metro rail infrastructure sites.

The anti-smog guns throw fine mist from time to time to control the possibility of dust contamination of the construction work.

Currently, as part of the Phase 4 expansion and some other construction projects, 12 civil contracts are operational in the national capital.

These state-of-the-art ASGs can spray fine mist up to 70-100 meters. One ASG is considered sufficient for an area of up to 20,000 square meters.

The DMRC said it ensures that the water used for irrigation is free of coliforms, viruses and bacteria.

“For greater impact, high-performance nozzles with droplet sizes from 10 to 50 micrometers are used. With the gradual expansion of construction work, more such ASGs will be introduced to the sites in the coming days,” it said.

The Delhi government imposed a ban on construction and demolition activities in the city in November due to rising air pollution.

“Currently, all construction works, except those that are non-polluting in nature, have been halted in accordance with the relevant guidelines. While the DMRC ensures that all instructions regarding pollution are fully adhered to, these fog guns have been installed as a permanent measure to are used at the sites all year round.Even when there is no construction work going on, Mist Guns prevent the loose soil/soil stored at construction sites from being released into the air, reducing air pollution,” it added.

Traditionally, anti-smog guns have been used in coal and cement factories around the world.

In November 2016, DMRC may have been the first construction company in the National Capital Region to use the ASGs at its sites as a pilot project.

Based on the feedback from the first use of ASGs at the sites, their use was made mandatory in the contract terms for civil contractors in the fourth expansion phase of DMRC.

Even the Delhi government has now mandated the use of ASGs for all construction firms in the national capital to combat pollution.

In this regard, detailed guidelines have also been issued regarding the use of water drops, nozzles.

It is clear that all of northern India, especially the Delhi NCR, struggles with the threat of severe pollution from October to December.
