Do you want a PS5? At Walmart, Amazon, and Best Buy you may need to subscribe first

It’s been almost a year since Sony SONY,
+0.36%
first released its PlayStation 5 video game consoles, and while it was over, 10 million already sold, they are still not generally available to customers.

Due to the huge demand, worldwide chip shortages and various supply chain problems, they are sold out at almost every store and PS5 consoles are for sale on resellers sites such as eBay EBAY,
+1.41%
for hundreds of dollars more than their original retail price. Microsoft’s MSFT,
+0.07%
new Xbox consoles suffer from the same demand and supply chain issues

In recent weeks, Walmart WMT,
+0.50%,
Amazon AMZN,
+0.01%
and Best Buy BBY,
-3.57%
limited quantities of the much sought-after PS5 released, but with a caveat: they’re subscribers only.

Even behind the pay walls, the PS5 consoles still sold out almost immediately.

For $98 per year, Walmart+ gives members delivery discounts and early access to some Walmart offerings; Best Buy’s Totaltech plan gives members additional technical support, product protection, and free shipping for $200 a year; and Amazon’s signature Prime service costs $119 a year.

Subscribing to these membership programs doesn’t guarantee you a PS5 console, but it does give members the first chance to get special product release drops and virtual checkouts in the hopes of getting a console for a retail price of $499.

“They’ve been a hot-ticket item all year round, so we encourage customers to sign up for Walmart+ for premium online access to these game consoles, as well as our other exciting Black Friday deals,” Rachel Nipper, director of corporate communications at Walmart, MarketWatch told.

Walmart hopes this method of product release will eliminate error pages for sought-after products like video game consoles and increase its subscriber base by putting its most popular products behind a paywall.

“Last year console pages on Walmart.com got a huge amount of traffic and we expect the same enthusiasm this year. That’s why we decided to roll out consoles and all the other hot items in separate windows to help unlock a smooth online shopping experience,” said Nipper.

Walmart wouldn’t say whether giving early, exclusive access to those kinds of products led to more subscriptions. Those who have signed up for free trials of Walmart+ are excluded from the video game console product releases.

This method of product releases helps eliminate “bots” trying to buy consoles, as only subscriber accounts can make purchases. Bots are software used to create multiple contest entries and faster checkout times for exclusive products. Bots are often used in limited online releases with products such as shoes, concert tickets and other collectibles – bot software is typically faster than humans in making online purchases.

Representatives from Amazon and Best Buy did not respond to requests for comment on this story.

“Customer demand for PS5 is so high,” Sony’s chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki said earlier this year. “We need to look at the global semiconductor shortage or try to increase our capacity. We are facing difficulties because of this global situation.”

When will PS5s become generally available? Sony says the deficit is unlikely to end until next year.

“I don’t think demand is declining this year,” Totoki told Bloomberg. “And even if we get a lot more devices next year and produce a lot more units of the PlayStation 5, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand.”

Round-Up for RMHC: restaurant owners take up the challenge

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Local McDonald’s owners have issued a challenge to Miami Valley customers to raise $25,000 for the Ronald MacDonald House Charities in Dayton.

According to a release, the challenge will begin on Giving Tuesday, November 30, and will run through Christmas Day. During this time, customers can opt for ‘Round-Up for RMHC’ when ordering from MacDonald’s area restaurants. If a customer says yes, the total is rounded up to the next dollar, with all proceeds going directly to RMHC Dayton.

“Rounding your total up is an easy way for anyone to give back. For most it’s only 25-50 cents per order, but that change is adding up quickly and helping to change the lives of families going through extremely challenging times,” said Kyle Kinney, a local McDonald’s owner. “We are so proud to continue our partnership with RMHC Dayton to help these families focus on what matters most: their child.”

More than 80 area restaurants compete to raise the most money during this period. According to the release, each restaurant only needs to raise $11.90 per day to meet the $25,000 goal.

Each week, the release said a traveling trophy will be awarded to the restaurant that raises the most. At the end of the challenge, the winning store will receive a trophy, special RMHC Dayton t-shirts, and restaurant staff recognition.

RMHC Dayton serves 3,200 families of sick and injured children each year by offering overnight stays at the Ronald McDonald House and by providing on-site rest through the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Dayton Children’s Hospital and Emmett’s Place at Miami Valley Hospital.

“The pandemic forced us to cancel most of our traditional fundraisers, so the Round-Up program is especially critical in helping us meet our operating budget at this time,” said Rita Cyr, CEO of RMHC Dayton. “We couldn’t continue serving families without the support of our local McDonald’s owners and operators through Round-Up and the donation boxes at the drive-thru and lobby.”

The challenge will only run until December 25th, but the Round-Up fundraiser is available year-round at all McDonald’s restaurants.
