Covid-19: Restaurant owner 'reluctantly leans towards' vaccination to save businesses and jobs

Masterton restaurant owner Caleb Kloeg says he reluctantly “tends to” get vaccinated so his business can continue and the staff don’t lose their jobs.

“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, not just in business, but in my life,” Kloeg said.

Labor Relations and Security Minister Michael Wood said on Tuesday that all staff working in hospitality, events, gatherings, businesses with close contacts and gyms must have their first vaccination by the time the traffic light system goes into effect on December 3.

Workers must have their second dose by January 17 to continue working.

Openly critical of the government’s Covid-19 response on social media, Kloeg and his staff run the restaurant in Saint Sebastian below Level 2 mask-less, despite it being a requirement.

Kloeg said he had not been vaccinated but now “tended towards” the personally painful decision to get the shot so that his company could continue to operate once New Zealand switched to the traffic light system on Dec. 3.

Caleb Kloeg in front of his restaurant Masterton, Saint Sebastian, says he doesn't want to take vaccine certificates if the government's traffic light system goes into effect.

PIERS FULLER/Things

Caleb Kloeg in front of his restaurant Masterton, Saint Sebastian, says he doesn’t want to take vaccine certificates if the government’s traffic light system goes into effect.

“The only reason I’m doing this is so my employees won’t lose their jobs or their livelihood and my customers can still come.”

He said he had enough vaccinated staff to run the restaurant once the deadline was passed, but he wouldn’t force other staff to get vaccinated, and he would try to find them roles in other parts of the business if necessary. .

His restaurant would opt out of the My Vaccine Pass vaccine pass program once the traffic light system goes into effect and would therefore operate under stricter restrictions.

That only included contactless at orange and red settings.

Kloeg said the sweeping mandate had major implications for the hospitality industry.

“In an industry already destroyed, it will… tear through and tear apart.”

Companies that fail to follow the My Vaccine Passes requirements risk fines up to $15,000.

Wood told stuff the government had indicated that workers in companies where vaccine certificates might apply should be vaccinated.

But that is not the impression that hospitality leaders had.

Marisa Bidois, CEO of the Restaurant Association of New Zealand says she understood that vaccination was not mandatory for staff in workplaces who were not using My Vaccine Passes.

Marisa Bidois, CEO of the Restaurant Association of New Zealand says she understood that vaccination was not mandatory for staff in workplaces who were not using My Vaccine Passes.

Marisa Bidois, CEO of the Restaurant Association, said she hadn’t understood that all staff in the hospitality industry would need to be vaccinated.

“Initially, we understood that the mandate would not apply to those companies that were not involved in the Covid passes.”

Companies that had no intention of using a vaccine pass did not expect to have to resolve the issue of mandatory vaccination with their staff, she said.

Julie White, CEO of Hospitality NZ, says there will be plenty of companies choosing not to use My Vaccine Passes.

Julie White, CEO of Hospitality NZ, says there will be plenty of companies choosing not to use My Vaccine Passes.

Julie White, CEO of Hospitality NZ, said she was not aware that vaccination would be mandatory for all hospitality staff.

“Our initial interpretation was that it might be optional for the company and the business owner whether they had a non-vaccine status that would apply to their staff,” White said.

“But we were always very hesitant to advise our members until things were black and white.”

That advice came on Friday morning, when the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment issued new guidelines for companies on the general rules for working under the framework.

White said there was no point in having a situation where unvaccinated customers would be allowed to enter a catering facility where all staff had been vaccinated.

“Where’s the risk management there?”

Niq James, chairman of Hair and Barber New Zealand, said he had been made aware of the mandate for all hairdressers to be vaccinated by word of mouth.

“We haven’t heard it officially yet,” James said.

Aaron Cameron declared Tasman Series champion after dramatic no result at Bathurst - Highway F1

Cameron was making his way through the field after a previous incident when he came into contact with Luis Leeds in pursuit, sending them both into the gravel at high speed.

The race was red flagged and Motorsport Australia declared that the race had reached the required distance to award championship points.

Cameron takes home $30,000 for taking home the title, while Roberto Merhi took $10,000 for second place plus $5,000 for top international.

Nathan Herne started the final feature race on pole position, with James Golding taking the lead from the start.

Championship leader Aaron Cameron stopped off the line and fell to the back of the pack as the pair of Team BRM teammates battled for second off the line.

Joey Mawson was fastest into the first corner, but ran wide through Hell Corner, with Roberto Merhi in second.

The frenetic running calmed down for a moment as the peloton raced over the top of the mountain, but the battle resumed on the fastest part of the track.

Nathan Herne thought twice about moving around Luis Leeds for sixth at the end of Conrod Straight, but recovered and sailed past Leeds from The Chase with Cameron close behind.

The Valvoline Team GRM charge through the pack quickly ended in tears, with Cameron Herne snapping in Hell Corner.

The pair spun into the gravel pit and pulled out the safety car.

All this in just two rounds.
