A little light fare from Hard Times Cafe for after Thanksgiving.

Tired of turkey sandwiches, stuffed salad, turkey tetrazzini, and the last of those crescent rolls? Take the family out after the Big Day and give yourself a reprieve from leftovers for at least one meal. Here are four spots waiting to do the dishes for you for a change.

Hard Times Cafe, 1404 King St.

Every Alexandrian knows Hard Times, the venerable chili joint on King Street. Also bring visiting family and friends to dip into a piping hot bowl and give yourself a break for the night. Five-way chili mac with a plate full of toppings? Go for it. In the mood for burgers instead of another turkey sandwich? You are in the right place. If you’re feeling a little chubby the weekend after the big Thanksgiving meal, Hard Times has that too — what! – also salads. Go wild.

Elizabeth’s Counter, 804 N. Henry St.

Bad old breakfast. It tends to get lost in the shuffle around Thanksgiving, when everyone is busy in the kitchen making dinner. Don’t miss out for the rest of the week either. Long known as a donut hub, Elizabeth’s Counter is an easy way to treat your guests to a sweet start to the weekend (and relieve the pressure of your own kitchen for a change). Dozens of flavors change almost daily, so place your order online and head to the store to pick up. (Might as well get some coffee while you’re there.)

St. Elmo’s, 2300 Mount Vernon Ave. and 529 Montgomery St.

And speaking of coffee, St. Elmo’s is a great place to caffeinate the clan (and maybe pick up a pastry or sandwich — we won’t tell the others). With treats like cortados and matcha lattes, the coffee department has everything under the sun. And whether you’re closer to the Del Ray or North Old Town location, it doesn’t matter! Both outposts will take good care of you.

Makeda, 516A South Van Dorn St.

Sometimes it’s time to move to another continent to break the American Thanksgiving rut. Makeda’s Ethiopian menu has that in abundance. The West End restaurant offers the whole range from vegetarian dishes to combinations to all kinds of lamb, poultry and seafood. Start the proceedings with some samosas, soft bags of lentils or meat, then move on to the main course of your choice (for variety, you can’t go wrong with the combination platters). And if you’re tired of cake, there’s a baklava waiting for you to order at the end of the meal.

Indian Parliament summons Facebook India officials to discuss citizens’ rights and Women’s safety

Last year, former Facebook data scientist Sophie Zhang published a memo describing how Facebook is being used to influence global politics. She spoke about advanced systems in India used to influence the 2020 Delhi elections, along with similar systems in other developing countries around the world. Now, following her memo and a recent controversy surrounding Facebook’s policies and impact on politics, Parliament has called on Facebook India officials to discuss women’s civil rights and security.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT) will be held on Nov. 29, with Congress leader Shashi Tharoor appointed as its chairman.

“To hear the views of Facebook India representatives on protecting civil rights and preventing the abuse of social/online news media platforms, including special emphasis on women’s safety in the digital space,” the committee’s agenda read.

Treating Social Media Like Publishers

Currently, our laws treat social media platforms as content intermediaries, and this approach has not done much to regulate the type of content that is published and distributed. With hate speech and fake news attributed to numerous municipal incidents across the country, the parliamentary panel set up last week to examine the impact of such platforms concluded they need a separate regulatory body, similar to the Press Council of India.

This will make the platforms more liable for user-generated content – something companies like Facebook and Twitter don’t want to take any responsibility for. In addition, as more and more consumers in tier-2 and tier-3 cities use smartphones and set up social media accounts, data protection itself has become a widespread government concern. With this in mind, the Personal Data Protection Act, 2019, may be revised to protect non-personal data from misuse by such companies.

What about the Metaverse?

While the Indian government is moving in the right direction in protecting its citizens, there is certainly a much bigger threat on the horizon – the Metaverse. As people move into virtual realities and build lives there, today’s data protection and privacy laws may eventually become meaningless. Imagine controlling factual experiences that influence public opinion, transforming people from subscribers to one political ideology to completely opposite. Now imagine this happening so subtly that you barely have time to reassess your values.

If companies like Meta want to make virtual worlds accessible to Indian citizens, they need to provide transparency about how they will use customer data.
